Discussion questions are always due the following class day; you need not write anything down, but be prepared to talk about the question. Written homework, unless otherwise specified, is due the Monday after it is assigned. Reading. unless otherwise specified, should be done before the next class meeting.

Week of January 4 - January 8, 2010

  • Read: Chapter 1. Optional reading (especially if the philosophical aspects of our study interest you): "The iterative conception of set," by George Boolos, in The Journal of Philosophy, available online.
  • Write up: Chapter 1, exercises 4.4, 4.5a, 4.6.
Wednesday:
  • Review: Chapter 1.
  • Read: Chapter 2, sections 1, 2 and 3. We will NOT continue through the textbook at this pace.
  • Write up: Chapter 1, exercise 3.7. Try to prove a metatheorem, or theorem schema, from which all parts of exercise 3.7 follow.
Friday:
  • Review: Chapter 2, sections 1, 2 and 3.
  • Read: The rest of Chapter 2.
  • Prepare to discuss: Any questions you have.
  • Write up: Chapter 1, exercise 3.6 (explain why this means there is no set of all sets); Chapter 2, exercise 2.5.
