Grading | ||||||||||||
The course grade will be computed as follows:
| ||||||||||||
Required Textbook | ||||||||||||
Abstract Algebra, Third Edition by Dummit and Foote
Homework | ||||||||||||
Homework will be assigned daily and collected at the beginning of class each Wednesday. Homework assigned on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of one week is due the following Wednesday. Late homework will not be accepted. All assignments will be posted here. The lowest homework score will be ignored in the final grade calculation.
The standards for proof-writing in this class are high. In particular, explain each step thoroughly using complete sentences and referencing the theorems/propositions used. Balance words with mathematical symbols: if you cannot read the proof out loud, add more words!
Honor Principle | ||||||||||||
For homework, collaboration is encouraged but all write-ups must be the student's own and done without outside assistance. Copying someone else's solution (in whole or part) is a clear violation of the honor principle.
For exams, students may not recieve assistance of any kind from any source except the instructor and may not give assistance to anyone.
Disabilities, Religious Observances, Etc.
Students with disabilities enrolled in this course and who may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to
make an appointment to see your instructor before the end of the second week of the term. All discussions will remain confidential,
although the Student Accessibility Services office may be consulted to discuss appropriate implementation of any accommodation requested.
Some students may wish to take part in religious observances that occur during this academic term. If you have a religious observance that conflicts with your participation in the course, please meet with your instructor before the end of the second week of the term to discuss appropriate accommodations. |
