Homework Assigments

Homework assigned each day is due at the beginning of class the next class. Special homework assigned on Monday is due the following Monday.

Week of January 5 - January 9, 2009
Assignments Made on:
Monday:
  • Review: Anything in the homework you have trouble with.
  • Read: Section 1.5.
  • Write up: Review exercises distributed in class.
  • Special Homework: I, distributed in class.
Wednesday:
  • Review: Limits, open sets and boundary points.
  • Read: As much of section 2.2 of the book as you can manage.
  • Write up: Section 1.5, problems 8 and 12, section 2.2, problems 8 and 19.
  • Study: First HW exercises, for quiz.
Friday:
  • Review: Class notes.
  • Read: Section 2.2 beginning with page 121, section 2.3.
  • Write up: Section 2.2, problems 7, 10, and 20.
Week of January 12 - January 16, 2009
Assignments Made on:
Monday:
  • Review: Class notes.
  • Write up: Homework exercises distributed in class.
  • Special Homework: II, distributed in class.
Wednesday:
  • Review: Differentiability.
  • Read: Section 2.5.
  • Write up: Section 2.5, problems 3(c), 9, 12, and 14. For 3(c), don't worry about justifying your answer, but write out the entire derivative matrix h'(x,y,z) in terms of the partial derivatives of u, v, and w; be sure you have 0 in entries you know to be zero.
Friday:
  • Review: Gradients and directional derivatives.
  • Read: Section 3.4 through page 239.
  • Write up: Section 3.4, problems 2, 11, 12, 20.
  • NOTE: There is no class on Monday 1/19, MLK day. There is class during the x-hour Thursday, 1/22, 1-1:50.
Week of January 19 - January 23, 2009

Wednesday:
  • Review: Lagrange Multipliers.
  • Read: Section 3.5.
  • Write up: Section 3.5, problems 2, 3, 5, 10c and 10d. (You do not have to know anything about spherical coordinates to do 10c and 10d, other than the formulas given in the problem.)
  • NOTE: This assignment, along with Thursday's assignment, is due on Friday.
  • Special Homework: None this week; begin studying for the exam next week.
Thursday:
  • Review: Implicit and Inverse Function Theorems.
  • Read: Sections 4.1 and 4.2.
  • Write up: Section 4.1, problems 2, 14; section 4.2, problems 9, 13(d).)
  • NOTE: This assignment, along with Wednesday's assignment, is due tomorrow (Friday).
  • Study: For a quiz tomorrow.
Friday:
  • Review: Curves and arclength.
  • Read: Section 7.1.
  • Write up: Section 7.1, problems 2, 11, 15; in class exercise (2). For 2(b), show the techniques you use to evaluate the integrals, don't use a table of integrals or a calculator.
  • NOTE: The first midterm is Wednesday of next week. Anything covered in class or homework through today may be on the midterm.

  • Review: Line integrals.
  • Read: Section 4.3 and 4.4.
  • Write up: Section 4.4, problems 4, 14, 26, and 32.
  • NOTE: This homework is due Friday, but we do have class tomorrow.
Thursday:
  • Review: Divergence and Curl.
  • Read: Sections 5.1 and 5.2.
  • Write up: Section 5.2 , problem 1.
Friday:
  • Review: Sections 5.1 and 5.2.
  • Read: Sections 5.3 and 5.4.
  • Write up: Section 7.1, problems 1, 5, 12, and 15. For problem 1 you will need to know a few definitions; do your best to learn them from the reading. (Then you can ask Michael.)
  • Study: Path integrals, line integrals, double integrals over rectangles, gradient, divergence, and curl for the quiz on Monday.
  • NOTE: Special schedule next week; we meet Thursday instead of Friday.
Week of February 9 - February 13, 2009

  • Review: Double integrals.
  • Write up: Section 5.3, problems 1, 5, 12, and 15, plus in-class exercises from today, available on Documents page. If you did the problems from Section 7.1 assigned on Friday, this is all you need to do. If instead you already did the problems from Section 5.3, you can either do the problems from Section 7.1 mistakenly assigned on Friday, OR you can do the additional homework problems available on the Documents page.
  • Special Homework: V, available now on Documents page.
  • NOTE: We meet during the x-hour this week, and not on Friday.
Wednesday:
  • Review: Section 5.4.
  • Read: Section 6.2 through page 386.
  • Write up: Section 5.4, problem 13; Section 6.2, problems 2, 9 and 11.

  • Write up: Section 7.3, problems (5), (10), and (14); section 7.4, problems (6) and (8). Notice that problem (8) does not ask you to evaluate the integral.
  • Special Homework: Section 7.4, exercise 16. Note, this will be our last special homework. Also note, special homework grades are not dropped when computing the final average, but you can turn in special homework late for partial credit. (Provided you allow time to rewrite if needed.)
Wednesday:
  • Review: Sections 7.3 and 7.4.
  • Read: Sections 7.5 and 7.6.
  • Write up: Section 7.5, problems (2), (7), (9) and (11).
Fri:
