Exams

There will be two midterm exams and a cumulative final exam. The exams are scheduled as follows:

Midterm 1	7/11, 6:00-8:00 PM	Kemeny 008
Midterm 2	8/1, 6:00-8:00 PM	Kemeny 008
Final Exam	8/24, 11:30 AM-14:30 PM	Kemeny 008

Homework Policy

• After each class I will update the syllabus page and assign homework. There will be many practice problems (which are NOT graded) and a couple of problems that are to be turned in. Homework need to be left in the boxes outside Kemeny 008 in the IN drawers by Friday at 12:00PM, and will be returned in the OUT boxes early next week. You need to turn in the homework assigned up to and including the previous wednesday.
  
  
• No late homework will be accepted and will thus be counted zero, but I'll drop the lowest homework score from the total grade.
  
  
• Make sure that you show all your work and explain all the steps. A correct answer with no work shown will receive minimal credit. This is good practice for what will be expected on exams.


• Make sure your homework is neatly written; if the graders cannot read it, you will receive zero credit.
  We also have some technical requirements: Use standard-sized paper that does not have ragged edges from being torn out of a spiral notebook.


• Download a copy of the FERPA waiver, print it, sign it and return it to me.
  By the way, FERPA which stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act guarantees the privacy of your academic records. In the context of graded papers, it means we cannot return them to homework boxes (since someone else could look at your paper and see your grade), unless you sign a waiver giving us permission to do so. If you choose to sign the waiver, please give it to your instructor during the first week of term. If you do not sign it, you can collect your homework from your instructor's office by showing your Dartmouth ID.
  
  

Grades

The course grade will be based upon the scores on the midterm exam, homework, and the final exam as follows:

Written homework	20%
Exam 1	20%
Exam 2	20%
Final Exam	40%

If you have a conflict with one of the midterm exams because of a religious observance, scheduled extracurricular activity such as a game or performance [not practice], scheduled laboratory for another course, or similar commitment, please see your instructor as soon as possible. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to submit all homework on time, and to arrange to get notes from a classmate.

During the class there will be some opportunity for extra credit through some (simple) proofwriting exercises or coding exercises. The total extra credit will not exceed 2%.

The Honor Principle

Academic integrity is at the core of our mission as mathematicians and educators, and we take it very seriously. We also believe in working and learning together.

Collaboration on homework is permitted and encouraged, but obviously it is a violation of the honor code for someone to provide the answers for you.

On written homework, you are encouraged to work together, and you may get help from others, but you must write up the answers yourself. If you are part of a group of students that produces an answer to a problem, you cannot then copy that group answer. You must write up the answer individually, in your own words.

On exams, you may not give or receive help from anyone. Exams in this course are closed book, and no notes, calculators or other electronic devices are permitted.

Tutorials

Tutorials will be on Monday and Thursday, 7:00-9:00 PM in Kemeny 007 (our regular classroom). They are drop-in, drop-out sessions, and you can come and go as you please. Please note that on June 30th (and only on that date) tutorials will be held in Carson L02.

Special Considerations

Students with disabilities who will be taking this course and may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an appointment to see their instructor as soon as possible. Also, they should stop by the Academic Skills Center in Collis Center to register for support services.
