MAC project

This module is part of the curriculum developed through the Mathematics Across the Curriculum (MAC) project. The MAC project began at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Washington in 2000. It was supported by the National Science Foundation (DUE #0088149), Edmonds CC, and other local and state agencies. Over the four years of the project, MAC involved 122 faculty representing 33 disciplines from 19 different high schools, colleges, and universities. The MAC project's goal was to support faculty in creating curricula to enable their students to experience the quantitative and mathematical aspects of many disciplines. For more information about MAC, see http://mac.edcc.edu.

Essay Writing for ESL Students
Deann Leoni
Edmonds Community College

This module consists of writing assignments (one essay assignment with lead-in exercises pertaining to statistics) that could be used in a high school English class, an advanced ESL class, or an introductory college writing course. These activities will provide students with an essay topic that is relevant to their lives, and they will enhance students’ quantitative reasoning skills. Students will improve their American-style essay-writing skills and their ability to analyze statistics.

The mathematics needed for this module are an ability to compute basic operations on numbers, decimals, and percents and a basic understanding of descriptive Statistics.

Along with the essay assignment, writing exercises and practice worksheets on analyzing statistics are provided. Assessment and comment forms for the instructor are also included.
