Homework for Week 1




You are encouraged to try as many of the exercises as possible from each of the sections covered in class, and I will be happy to discuss any of the exercises beyond those included on this list. Try and do at least one problem from each subsection of the exercise set from each section. Please write up these assigned exercises and turn them in during the class period following the day that they're assigned. In writing them up, please explain your methods in solving the problems. Just giving the answers won't gain you much credit.

  • Assigned Wednesday 3/27:

    Read sections 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3, and the brief handout on Venn Diagrams.

    Complete the following problems:

    5.1: 10, 24, 26, 50*, 51*

    5.2: 6, 22, 50

    5.3: 12, 16, 36, 44 (Note: Please Draw Venn Diagrams for the exercises in this section)

  • Assigned Friday 3/29:

    Read Sections 5.4, 5.5.

    Complete the following problems:

    5.4 8, 14, 18, 44*, 48, 54*

    5.5 38, 44, 54, 62, 70*

    *Denotes exercise as more challenging than the others. Take care in your responses to these exercises.
