- For Wednesday and Friday, Jan. 9th, 11th : FAPP 1,2,3,5
and O: p. 191-2, 1,12,13. Also, the following: Class Problem 1: Consider
the example given in class (4 orderings of A, B, C). a. Can any group
(I, II, III, or IV) vote strategically under the Coombs process to change
the outcome? b. Are there any other strategies (under any method of
voting) that can change the outcome of the vote that were not discussed in
class? c. Are there any strategies that are in conflict with each other?
(that is, if two groups used strategies, what would be the outcome? would
they counter each other? discuss)
- Read the articles handed out in class (Fishburn and Brams,
"Paradoxes of preferential voting" and Valley News article)
- Suggested reading: O: Chapter 6; FAPP: Ch. 9 (in particular,
p. 181); L&R: 2 pages handed out and 14.8.
