Homework

Homework will be assigned weekly, and will be due Wednesday at the beginning of class. Assignements will be posted on the course webpage after class.  Each assignment will cover the previous week’s material.  Late homework will NOT be accepted, barring a very impressive excuse preferably with advanced warning.

My personal philosophy about homework is that the process of solving a problem is far more important than the actual solution itself.  Even if you are unable to complete a problem, please submit whatever work you have as partial credit is certainly possible.

Each homework problem will be graded on a scale of 0 to 3 points:

  0

left blank,
incorrect problem attempted,
or statement of problem rewritten with no work

  1

partial progress towards solution

  2

correct answer with incomplete work shown,
or correct work with incorrect answer
(e.g. arithmetic mistakes)

  3

correct answer with complete work shown

Examinations

There will be one exam and a final in this course:

Exam 1: Take Home from Monday, October 24 to the start of class on Friday, October 28.

Final Exam: To be Announced.

Grades

The grades in this course will be calculated as follows:

Homework

30%

Midterm

35%

Final Exam

35%

Also, extra credit questions will be given periodically throughout the term.

           Honor Principle

On Exams: No help given or received.

On Homework: Working together is permitted and encouraged, but NO COPYING.   You are welcome to work in groups to discuss the ideas and specific problems (also feel free to discuss with your instructors and anyone else you may find). However, each student is expected to produce the final written homework set individually and independently.

Disabilities

Students with learning, physical, or psychiatric disabilities enrolled in this course that may need disability-related classroom accommodations are encouraged to make an office appointment to see me before the end of the second week of the term. All discussions will remain confidential, although the Student Disability Services office may be consulted to discuss appropriate implementation of any accommodation requested.

Also, they should stop by the
Academic Skills Center in Collis Center to register for support services.
