Abstract: One can introduce a "space of all graphs of a given type", for example by letting a point in this space be such a graph equipped with a suitable metric. A basic case of this construction, the "Outer space" of Vogtmann et al, has been used to study automorphisms of free groups. Other cases are involved in current work on automorphisms of manifolds.

This talk will be accessible to graduate students.
