Math-Related Links

As with the computer links, the disclaimer is I have not checked these links to make sure they still work. Coming when I get to it.

General reference

Online LaTeX references are listed on my computer-related links page.

The American Mathematical Society.
MathWorld.
The Mathematical Association of America.
The Association for Women in Mathematics.

The Chronicle of Higher Education's Facts and Figures page makes for interesting reading, though in my opinion the math genealogy page makes more interesting reading.

Curiosities: A page of famous codes and ciphers, one of interesting mathematical calculations, and the online encyclopedia of integer sequences.

Logic

A master list of computability theorists, maintained by my advisor, Peter Cholak.
The Association for Symbolic Logic.
A list of ASL member websites (I'll put myself on there when I get my new web address this summer).

Kind of paltry right now, I know. I'll add some more later.

Teaching

General teaching sites

An excellent site to point students to is Understanding Mathematics by Peter Alfeld at the University of Utah. TextReview, while I haven't tried it myself, looks interesting and has gotten good remarks. It is a way for your students to let you know how they are using the book and how helpful they find it.

For review of skills assumed by the text (most recently, polynomial long division), I point my students to S.O.S. Math, which has an easy to navigate layout and explanations plus exercises with answers.

Someday I'll figure out how to use this for teaching: a list of women and minorities in science and engineering. In the same vein, the AWM biography contest is a place to find out about women mathematicians.

Material-specific sites

If you teach infinite sequences and talk about the Fibonacci numbers, this page will be a useful resource. I especially like the part about bee family trees. For now that's all I have. More to come as I find it.

The Job Search

My main destination when on the job market was the AMS employment services page, for listings of openings. The Yahoo directory of colleges and universities can be useful for finding school webpages. More recently I discovered the Yahoo search for colleges, directed at high school seniors. It's a nice place to get an overview of the school and some essential statistics. Finally, another AMS page is aimed at helping those on the market in creating a good application and interviewing.
