The thing that counts is not what we know, but the ability to use what we know.

Reading

Read the handout from class today.
Read what we covered in today's class: 9.1
Read what we will cover in the next class: 9.2

When reading 9.1 pay special attention to the following concepts:

  • the formula for integration by parts (Theorem 1), the derivation of this formula from the product rule, the advice on pages 494-495, LIATE (what does this strange word mean???), Examples 7 and 8 are very important too...
When reading 9.2 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • rational function, proper and improper rational functions, irreducible factors, what types of irreducible factors are possible?, Examples 4 and 5, check out the algorithm on the bottom of page 506, note the general form and how to handle repeated factors (p. 507), partial fraction decomposition, Example 8 is important.

Problems

The following problems are due by the beginning of class on Friday 1/8.
  • 9.1: 3, 8, 12, 13, 16, 19, 27, 32, 33a-d.
Note: just evaluate the integrals for 8, 12,16,19, 27 and be sure to provide complete justifications for 33.
