Read what we will cover in class on 2/3: Chapter 8 and Chapter 9

When reading Chapter 8 pay special attention to the following concepts:

  • external direct product, Example 1 and Example 2, Theorem 8.1: the order of an element in an external direct product, Example 4 and Example 5, Theorem 8.2 and it's Corollary: criterion for external direct products to be cyclic, Theorem 8.3: the characterization of U(n) as an external direct product.
When reading Chapter 9 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • normal subgroup, the normal subgroup test, the examples of normal subgroups, factor groups (this is why we care about normal subgroups), the examples of factor groups, the applications of factor groups: Theorems 9.3, 9.4, 9.5.

Problems

The following problems are due by the beginning of class on Wednesday 2/3.
  • Ch 8 : 1, 4, 5, 6, 14, 17, 21, 23, 24, 25.
