Math 31 Homework #4

Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
Lewis Carroll

Reading

Read what we will cover in the next two classes: Chapters 0, 4

When reading Chapter 0 pay special attention to the following concepts:

  • Division Algorithm, greatest common denominator, relatively prime, GCD as linear combination (note: we will leave proofs of these results to a number theory course, just know the notions; they should look familiar from your grade school or high school classes)
When reading Chapter 4 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • the definition of cylic group and generator of cyclic group and some good examples (and nonexamples),
  • the basic properties of elements of cyclic groups: Theorem 4.1 and its Corollary, Theorem 4.2 and its Corollary
  • the classification of subgroups of cyclic groups: Theorem 4.3 and its Corollary, Theorem 4.4, and the notion of a subgroup lattice.

Problems

The following problems are due by the beginning of class on Wednesday 1/13.
  • Ch 1 : 1, 2, 3, 12
  • Ch 2 : 33
  • Ch 3 : 10, 14, 15, 22
  • Prove Theorem 3.6 : C(a) is a subgroup.
  • Identify the centralizer of each element of D3 and identify the center of D3.
