Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reading

Read what we will cover in the next class: Chapters 2, 3

When reading Chapter 2 pay special attention to the following concepts:

  • Example 11 and U(n), Theorems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.
When reading Chapter 3 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • order of group, order of element, subgroup and the various adjectives including: proper, trivial, nontrivial, and Theorem 3.2.

Problems

The following problems are due by the beginning of class on Friday 1/8.
  • Prove Theorem 0.3.2 and Theorem 0.3.3 on page 20.
  • Why is f : Z -> Z defined by f(x) = x2 not 1-1 and not onto?
  • Ch 2 : 1, 2, 8, 15, 17, 25, 30, 31.
    For 8 and 15, just do the problem for n = 3. Also, provide details on the problems where you are shuffling symbols around; in particular, what parentheses go where and which property of groups you are using to go from one line to the next.
