Reading

Read the handout on reading mathematics textbooks.
Read what we covered in today's class: Chapter 0
Read what we will cover in the next class: Chapters 0, 2

When reading Chapter 0 pay special attention to the following concepts:

  • equivalence relation, equivalence classes, know examples and nonexamples; modular arithmetic, Example 5 is important; functions, domain, codomain, image, composition, 1-1, onto, note the examples and nonexamples in Example 18, Theorem 0.3.
Note that we are skipping a few pages at the beginning of this Chapter. If you want to read them that's fine, but they are not required...
When reading Chapter 1 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • the biography of Niels Abel on p.39 is interesting.
When reading Chapter 2 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • binary operation, group, note the examples and nonexamples (p. 47 has a nice summary of examples), Theorems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.

Problems

The following problems are due by the beginning of class on Wednesday 1/6.
  • Ch 0: 27, 28, 30, 36, 42, 43, 44.
Example 5 is relevant to problems 28 and 30.
