Math 29 Homework #6

...as far as the propositions of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain;
and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.
Albert Einstein

Quiz

Remember that we have a quiz on Monday 4/12 on Lectures 4 - 6.

Reading

Read what we covered in today's class: 2.4 - 2.5
Read what we will cover in the next class: 2.5, 3.1, 3.2

When reading 2.5 pay special attention to the following concepts:

  • minimalization, Theorem 5.2 (what does it say? why is this important?), Corollary 5.3 (how is this different from Thm 5.2?), the Ackermann function.
When reading 3.1 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • The Fundamental Result (This is the primary evidence in support of Church's Thesis).
When reading 3.2 pay special attention to the following concepts:
  • Partial recursive functions, Theorem 2.2.

Problems

The following problems are due by the beginning of class on Monday 4/12.
  • Define and give an example for each of the following:
    • partial recursive function
    • primitive recursive function
  • p. 41, # 2.4.16.1 d,e,f
  • p. 41, # 2.4.16.3
(Follow the hint and use a variation on pi1 from #2.4.16.2)
  • p. 42, # 2.4.16.4
  • p. 45, # 2.5.4.1
  • If psi(x,y) is the Ackermann function, compute the value of: psi(3,2).
