  • Do: pp 22 - 24: 5, 14, 24, 34, plus the following problem:
  • Blue Eyes and Logic

On an island live seventeen natives all of whom have blue eyes, and who worship the sun as god. They are capable of perfect logic, and live by the two rules:

    • No native reveals the color of a person's eyes to that person.
    • If a native learns that their eyes are blue, they must jump off a cliff at 11:59:59 pm of the day they discover this fact.

A missionary comes to the island with the intent to convert the natives to the ``true faith'', but after months of effort fails to persuade even a single native. Discouraged, the missionary leaves, but just as he departs he tells the natives (all of whom have gathered to see him off) that ``at least one of you has blue eyes''.

    1. Describe what happens over the course of the next year.
    2. The far more interesting question is what (if anything) did the missionary tell the natives that they didn't already know?
